THE BALKANS

The Balkans

——

Over a span of 13 days, I travelled through the borders of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia with the Leica SL.

The region gets its name from the Balkan Mountains that stretch throughout the whole of Bulgaria from the Serbian-Bulgarian border to the Black Sea coast. The Balkan Peninsula is bordered by the Adriatic Sea on the northwest, the Ionian Sea on the southwest, the Aegean Sea in the south and southeast, and the Black Sea on the east and northeast.

The area was historically known as a crossroads of cultures — a place of intersection between the Latin and Greek bodies of the Roman Empire, the destination of a massive influx of pagan Bulgars and Slavs, an area where Orthodox and Catholic Christianity met, as well as the meeting point between Islam and Christianity.
